12 Years a Slave is a historical drama film and an adaptation of the 1853 journal of the same name by Solomon Northup, a New York State-born free African american who was kidnapped in Washington, D.C. in 1841 and sold into slavery leaving his wife and children with no knowledge of his whereabouts. He worked on plantations in the state of Louisiana for twelve years before his release. The film right from the start is very gripping and emotional, it hopes back and forth from past to present giving you a nicely passed film that covers the painful 12 years of wrongful ownership. Solomon played by Chiwetel Ejiofor delivers a fantastic performance that makes you truly feel and understand hardships and emotions. Needless to say this is was and is not just one of my favorite 2013 films but also in my top 20 movies of all time and in my top 10 historical era films of all time. If you have not seen this I highly recommend it, you don't know what you are missing. I hope the movies gets the recognition is deserves at the Oscars.
