Catching Fire SPOILER FILLED REVIEW!!!
Hey everyone and welcome to my spoiler filled review. Yes I said Spoiler filled review, if you haven't seen the movie and hate spoilers check out my Non-spoiler review. Moving on!
Walking into this movie my hopes were not very high, i liked the first one but it wasn't what i was hoping for having just finished the books about a week before hand. BUT this one was a HUGE improvement I thought from the start to finish I was able to dive into the movie and characters. I really liked how they picked up with Katniss(Jennifer Lawrence) having problems readjusting after the games as well as being torn between her feelings for Peeta(Josh Hutcherson) and Gale(Liam Hemsworth). Also have to point out that Donald Sutherland is an amazing bad guy, I actually get chills when hes on screen and I am sure that Jennifer Lawrence has a part to play in that as she has been getting better and better as as an actress with every movie.
I did have 1 very small problem with the movie that at the same time isn't much a problem more of a quirk, I would of liked to see more build up in Peeta and Katniss relationship before the big kiss scene on the beach during the games. There are subtle drops or hints leading into this but just of liked a little more.
The most powerful scene in the movie and my personal favorite was the on stage talk between Katniss and Caesar (Stanley Tucci). Cinna telling her that President Snow (Donald Sutherland) is forcing her to wear the wedding dress she never got to wear to her and Peeta's faked marriage, and that he had built in a secret for her to show off at the end. She walked forward to show off her dress like in the previous movie, the flames engulf it changing it from the white wedding dress to Mocking-jay inspired dress.
I really liked how they kept the scene where Cinna gets attacked by peacekeepers (because of the scene mentioned above) after Katniss is put into her pod. I had actually forgotten that until it happened, and again Jennifer Lawrence(Katniss) delivered a tear jerking performance during that, the fear, the pain and helplessness that just streamed across her face was perfect. Then of course during the games when Mags dies to save Peeta, that was another tear jerking scene...which is a trend with this I'm seeing...
I really loved how they kept the clock arena and brought what I had imagined to life on the big screen. Including the tree that was struck by lightening every hour on the hour. Moving into the end of the movie after Katniss destroys the arena and is saved by Haymitch(Woody Harrelson) and Plutarch(Philip Seymour Hoffman) and goes ballistic when she sees that Peeta is not with them. So much so that shes put to sleep only to wake up next to Gale in district 13. After Gale tells what happened to district 12 (it was burned to the ground by Snow's anger) the multitude of emotions that run across her face was PERFECT, I did not want it to end I was ready to go straight into the third movie from there.
All in all I give this beast of an epic movie a 9/10 and recommend anyone sitting on the fence to get off and see it. Liked my review? Have something to add? Leave a comment and follow me on twitter for movie news and upcoming reviews!
